Douyin's New Rules Are Here: What Overseas Brands Need to Know
Douyin's September 2026 updates point to a broad change in how content and commerce are evaluated. The platform is placing less emphasis on short-term traffic alone and more emphasis on whether users stay, save, revisit and continue engaging with an account. For merchants, fulfillment quality and customer experience are becoming more important as well.
This matters for international brands because many overseas teams still approach Chinese social media through campaign bursts: launch a creator video, buy traffic, push a product and measure the first few days. Douyin's direction makes that model less reliable. A brand needs content that continues to be useful after the initial release and operations that support the user after the order.
Overall Completion and Long-Term Signals
The updated short-video system gives overall completion more weight than only three-second or five-second retention. Interaction signals are also prioritized, with saves, repeat visits and loyal-fan engagement becoming important indicators of content value. A video that attracts a large initial audience but fails to keep viewers or generate useful interaction may not move into higher traffic pools.
This changes creative planning. The hook still matters, but it cannot carry the whole video. The body needs a clear reason to continue watching, and the ending should give users a reason to save, revisit or discuss the content. For international brands, product demonstrations, tutorials, comparison content, customer questions and scenario-based explanations may perform better over time than highly polished but shallow advertisements.
Compliance Is Part of Distribution
The updates also reinforce several compliance boundaries. Accounts using virtual digital people need real-name registration. Low-quality AI content produced in bulk may be identified and receive lower distribution. Off-platform diversion through videos, livestreams, comments or private messages is treated as a high-risk behavior, especially in categories such as finance, part-time work and AI courses.
Content involving minors is being handled more strictly, including misleading use of child-related themes, AI-generated distress images and adults presenting themselves as minors in livestreams. Fictional or staged content also needs clear labeling where required.
International brands should treat these rules as part of the media plan. Content review, account ownership, creator contracts, AI disclosure, customer data handling and lead-generation paths need to be decided before publishing. Compliance problems can affect distribution, commissions and account access, not only the individual post.
Merchant Experience Scores and Livestream Health
Merchant experience score rules have also changed, with logistics indicators adjusted from September 8. Natural disasters, major events and other approved circumstances may receive special handling, but merchants still need to monitor the backend and follow the available appeal process.
Livestream evaluation is moving toward a longer seven-day cycle rather than judging a single session in isolation. Account health scores also affect recommendation and tipping functions. The practical meaning is simple: stable broadcasting, reliable fulfillment and consistent customer service are more valuable than gambling on one dramatic livestream.
For international brands, local operations become essential. Delivery promises, inventory, returns, customer service language and creator training all affect the account's long-term performance. A strong product can still lose distribution if the China operating system is weak.
How International Brands Should Respond
International brands should audit their Douyin presence in five areas. First, check whether the content creates real value and encourages saves or repeat visits. Second, review every claim, AI label and creator script. Third, make sure lead generation follows platform-approved paths. Fourth, monitor logistics, refunds, service and merchant experience scores. Fifth, build a seven-day content and livestream rhythm instead of planning only around launch day.
The wider lesson is that Douyin is becoming a more mature Chinese social commerce platform. It still rewards creativity and speed, but those strengths now need to sit on top of product truth, compliance and operational quality.
